2021-02-14 - Trying out Gemini, for a stripped back internet
In February 2021, it seems the linux tech buzz is around Gemini, a new internet protocol or as noted in the FAQs, “the web, stripped right back to its essence”. There’s no user tracking, adverts, pages littered with images detracting from content requiring more and more resource intensive bloated software to consume, no there’s just content and a heap ton of nostalgia.
To me, the process of finding “capsules”, the gemini term for sites, and consuming content is like being back when I first started using the internet over a 56Kps modem on Freeserve, with software installed from a free cd-rom on Windows 98. Ahh those tones. When user content ruled, a time of Geocities and free hosting measured in the MBs.
I decided to add my own little contribution. To see it you’ll need a gemini client. I’ve used the following and both are excellent.
